Regardless of whether it’s the uppercase or lowercase version of the letter, you’re essentially creating a curved line that looks a little like a fish hook.
Writing the letter is easy to learn, but we are not here to create a regular version of this letter! Instead, we’ll show you how to create a bubble with the letter “J”.
To do this, we’ll guide you through 6 easy and fun steps that will show you how to draw it and add some details to make it even better.
Additionally, there will be a section at the end introducing some fun ideas that you can try to make it even more unique.
How to Draw A Bubble Letter J
Step 1
As mentioned in the introduction, the letter J is a simple curved shape that looks a bit like a fish hook. Sometimes a capital J can have a line at the top, but we don’t have that in this design.
Against this background we now draw the first part of this letter. Before you start drawing a line, you should first plan it with a pencil.
You can do this by drawing a large, regular J shape, which you then use to create the bubble version.
You don’t have to do this, but it can definitely help! In this step we will draw a curved rounded line for the lower left part of the letter.
Once we’ve drawn this section of the letter to match our reference image, we can move on to step 2.
Step 2
In this second step of the guide, we’re going to keep things very simple. In this part we will expand the line you started in the previous step.
We drew the small “tail” section of the J in the previous step, and in this step we draw the base of the letter.
Just keep the line where it ended in the previous step and keep the curve. As you can see in the reference image, this line then begins to curve upwards.
We will create the main pillar of the J where this line ends, but that will be done in later steps. First, try to match the drawing as closely as possible to our example.
Then we can move on to step 3 where we continue building this letter.
Step 3
In this third step of the tutorial we will start drawing the central column of the bubble with the letter J. For this we will add a slightly curved vertical line.
As you can see in the reference image we provided, this line extends where the line in step 2 ended.
Ideally, when you draw this line, you want it to be straight, but not too straight. We don’t want lines that are too straight because we want the letter to look like it came out of a bubble.
After drawing this side of the pillar, there will be a fairly large blank space on the left side. The next step is to fully complete the outline before adding some internal details.
Step 4
As mentioned in step 3, this fourth step of the guide is all about completing the pattern of this letter J.
To do this, we’ll use a wavy wavy line to fill in the empty space on the left side of the letter. It starts where the line in the previous step ended at the top of the J.
It will hang down and then curve sharply to complete the J’s tail. Once this line is drawn, the outline of the letter is complete!
Now you can draw some interior details. However, make sure you’re ready before proceeding to step five.
One way to do this is to erase the pencil lines you used to prepare the drawing. At the very beginning we mentioned how to draw an ordinary letter J with a pencil.
If so, now would be a good time to address the issue. Then it’s time for step 5 where we’ll add some cool interior details to the brief!
Step 5
The main goal of this guide was to make the letter J look like it was made out of a bubble or balloon. We’ll now help you complete this effect with a few simple details.
First we’ll make the letter reflective by drawing some simple oval shapes on top of the letters. As you can see in the reference image we are using two of these oval shapes.
There will be one at the top of the J and then one at the back end on the left side of the letter. You can even add a few more of those reflective dots if you want!
Next we’ll create the illusion that the J is made out of a bubble or balloon by adding some texture lines to the letter.
These go into the outline and help make it look more like an object than a flat letter.
This is another detail that would allow you to add more of these lines if you wanted to make the effect even stronger.
Once you’ve drawn those lines, you can add some color in step six! However, you don’t have to move on just yet.
Before coloring your pic, you can also add some fun extra details. For example, you can draw a background for the image.
This could be a simple background pattern or you could draw a real environment. In the next step we’ll go through some ideas for you to try, but feel free to come up with some ideas in the meantime.
Step 6
It’s always fun to relax while coloring, and that’s exactly what we’re going to do in this final step. This is your chance to show your creativity in color!
In our example image we show you one of the many different color options you have for your design.
As the main subject of this image, we have chosen a dark blue color scheme. Although dark blue is the main color, we also used some lighter shades.
Mixing light and dark tones can help make reflective parts more visible and make the image appear less flat.
You can choose the same colors as us, but you can also use any other color you like! It doesn’t have to be just one color.
There are also some fun ways to incorporate lots of different colors. So you should let your creativity run free and explore the possibilities with your favorite art tools.
With that, your drawing is complete! Before we finish, we’ll give you a few more ideas on how to make it even better.
